Using timber from Mt. Takao, Hojo Ujiteru built a barrier at Kobotoke Pass as a strategic location on the border between the provinces of Musashi and Sagami, and this became the precursor of the Kobotoke Barrier. Afterwards, the barrier was moved to the foot of the pass, and following the fall of the Hojo family, it was strictly guarded by Tokugawa Ieyasu as the border with Koshu. Along the old Koshu Kaido Route, old private houses are dotted about, and the mountain pass still retains the appearance of an old road.
