Since ancient times, Mt. Takao has been revered as a sacred mountain of Shugendo (mountain religion), and one of the ways Hojo Ujiteru worshipped and protected it was by forbidding the felling of trees.
The Tokugawa Shogunate also continued to protect the mountain, and as a result, the area is still abundant in nature.
The Takao 599 Museum at the foot of the mountain is a place that teaches the history as well as the flora and fauna of Mt. Takao. It is possible to experience the culture of Mulberry City through the annual events at Yakuoin Temple, the Kiyari (traditional work songs and performances of high-altitude workers), lion dances, Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo (cart puppetry), Hachioji geisha, and the like.
