The Kiyari (traditional work songs and performances of high-altitude workers), which has been preserved over generations in Hachioji, is said to have been initially inherited from Edo-period Kiyari workers in 1864. The preservation committee called Hachioji Firefighters Memorial Association has taken over the tradition of the Hachioji high-altitude workers’ pilgrimage to Takaosan Yakuoin Temple, which was passed down from the Tenpo era (1830–1844). They also perform the Kiyari-uta (workmen’s song) and ladder-climbing as offerings at the grand spring festival.
