Hachioji has a long history of sake brewing. It is blessed with many rivers and abundant underground water necessary for brewing, with their source being the mountains of Mulberry City. It is said that the descendants of the retainers of Hojo Ujiteru began brewing sake more than 200 years ago.
The various sakes including “Takaosan,” the sacred sake of Yakuoin Temple, as well as other local names like “Kuwanomiyako,” “Hachioji-jo,” “Ujiteru,” and “Takao no Tengu,” continue to be loved by the people of Mulberry City.
