The origins of Hachioji Textiles are said to date back to the market that was once held on the grounds of Takiyama Castle.
Over the course of its 400-year history, its weaving techniques have been refined and improved, evolving into Tamaori (Tama woven fabrics), a designated National Traditional Craft of Japan. This course offers a unique opportunity to explore the exquisite weaving techniques boasted by Hachioji/Mulberry City, the historic ruins of Takiyama Castle, and its surrounding natural scenery.

Arrival and lunch at Michinoeki Hachioji Takiyama
Discover fresh produce and local Hachioji specialties

Michinoeki Hachioji Takiyama is the only roadside station in Tokyo.
It showcases a variety of Tokyo delights, including Hachioji-grown fruits and vegetables, as well as livestock products.
The station is brimming with attractions: Farm Takiyama, for fresh local produce; Hachimakiya, for traditional side dishes made with local ingredients; Milk Ice MO-MO , for soft serve ice cream crafted with Hachioji milk and gelato made with seasonal ingredients; Takiyamachaya, for enjoying pasta, coffee, and desserts; and Saishokuan, for other culinary offerings.

Arrival at Takiyama Castle Ruins

Takiyama Castle Ruins, a designated National Historic Site, is recognized as one of Japan's most significant medieval castle ruins.
While Hachioji Castle Ruins is included in the List of 100 Famous Castles in Japan , Takiyama Castle Ruins has secured a spot on the Continued List of 100 Famous Castles in Japan .
The surrounding hills and mountains, reminiscent of Mt. Yoshino in Nara, reflect the area’s rich history, including remnants of the Shugendo (mountain religion) culture of the Heian period (794–1185). In 1971, the residents of the Kasumi area and the local government collaborated to plant cherry trees, such as the Yoshino cherry and Japanese mountain cherry varieties, transforming the site into one of Tokyo’s premier cherry blossom viewing spots many years later.

Workshop at the Sawai Textile Factory
Learn about Tamaori and make a coaster or placemat (about 1 hour) / Reservations required

The Sawai Textile Factory is located in Takatsuki, a tranquil rural town just over a hill from the city center of Hachioji.
Founded in the latter half of the 1800s, the factory started with silkworm farming and gradually transitioned into a hand-weaving factory.
Today, it operates as a textile factory headed by a fourth-generation traditional craftsman who embraces innovation.

Visit Hachikaku

Hachihaku, short for Soto Japan Heritage Center Hachioji Museum , opened in June 2021.
The museum showcases the only Japan Heritage story certified in Tokyo, Mt. Takao: Mountain of Spirits ~ Mulberry City spun with people’s prayers ~ . It explores the history and culture of Hachioji, spanning from ancient times to the future.
There are also exhibits related to Takiyama Castle and Hachioji Castle, and a highlight of the museum is its interactive projection model which allows the two renowned castles to be freely compared.
