Hachioji prospered as a textile town, and a geisha quarter was established. Traders from all over the country came to buy textiles, and the merchants of Mulberry City entertained their guests at luxurious Japanese-style restaurants. Before the war, Mt. Takao also became a place for entertaining visitors as a sightseeing destination.
At the grand autumn festival of Yakuoin Temple, the Maisenkuyo (memorial service for fans used in dances) is held, and the strong faith of the geishas in Yakuoin Temple can be observed. These geishas have been passing on the history of Mulberry City through song and dance, and their dance performances can be seen at various events in the city, including the Hachioji Matsuri Festival.
